The short answer

These are not competing options. A softener removes hardness by ion exchange and filters nothing. A filter removes particles, chemicals or organisms and does nothing about hardness. Most wells need both, and the filter goes first — sediment and iron foul softener resin.

Which one is right for you

Choose Water softener if

  • Scale in kettles, heaters and on fixtures.
  • Soap that will not lather, spotting on glassware.
  • Hardness above about 7 grains per gallon.

Choose Water filter if

  • Cloudy water, grit or sand.
  • Taste and odour problems.
  • A positive bacteria test (UV) or nitrate and arsenic (reverse osmosis).
  • Iron above about 3 mg/L, which needs a dedicated oxidising filter.

Why people ask this

The question comes up constantly because both are large tanks that plumb into the main line and both are sold as "water treatment". From the outside they look like alternatives.

They are not, and the confusion is expensive in a specific way: people buy a softener for a problem it cannot touch. A softener will not help a sulfur smell, cloudy water, a bacteria result, or nitrate. It removes hardness. That is the entire function.

The useful question is not which one, but which problems you actually have — and that is a water test rather than a product decision.

Most wells need both, in this order

For a typical well with hardness and some iron, the arrangement is a sediment filter, then an iron filter if iron is above about 3 mg/L, then the softener, then carbon or UV if taste or bacteria call for it.

The ordering is not arbitrary. Sediment and iron foul ion exchange resin, so filtration protects the softener. Carbon and UV go after, because they should be treating water that is already clear.

Getting this backwards is the most common and most expensive error in well water treatment.

Whole-house filter or under-sink?

A second question hiding inside the first. Whole-house filtration treats everything — showers, laundry, appliances — and is what you need for sediment, iron and anything causing staining or damage.

Point-of-use filtration treats one tap, and is what you need for drinking water quality specifically. Reverse osmosis in particular is fitted under a sink, because it is slow and wastes water.

The split is usually: whole-house for anything that damages your plumbing or your laundry, point-of-use for anything that only matters in a glass.

Frequently asked questions

Does a water softener filter water?
No. It exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium and has no filtration function. Sending sediment through a softener actively fouls the resin bed, which is why a sediment filter goes ahead of it.
Do I need a water filter if I have a softener?
On a well, almost always. At minimum a sediment filter to protect the softener, plus an iron filter if iron is above about 3 mg/L, plus UV or reverse osmosis if your test shows bacteria, nitrate or arsenic.
Which comes first, the filter or the softener?
Filtration first. Sediment and iron foul softener resin, so anything removing them belongs upstream. Carbon and UV are the exception — those go after the softener, treating water that is already clear.
Will a whole-house filter soften my water?
No. Carbon, sediment and KDF media do not remove hardness. Only ion exchange removes it, or a salt-free system converts it — and the latter leaves it in the water.
